Images of text

Where possible, don't use images of text.

Let's recap on some of the things we've learned so far:

  • good contrast is important for legibility
  • alt text has a short character limit
  • images can become blurry when zoomed in.

These are some of the reasons why it is not recommended to include text in images.

Let's look at an example.

Example: Housing Hub website banner

Colleagues are designing a new website, and have suggested uploading a banner image with text included in the picture.

In their banner design, some of the text is lost against the background because it is embedded in the image itself and doesn't have a high contrast with the background graphic. The text becomes blurry when the image is enlarged.

Original design: text included in picture

Example image showing blurry text "The new Housing Hub is coming soon"
The text embedded in the banner is hard to read and becomes blurry when enlarged.

Updated design: text separated from picture

The new Housing Hub is coming soon

Example of the banner using the same picture but with no text embedded
Now that the text is removed from the banner, the image can be marked decorative as it has no meaning.
