Add alternative text (alt text)

All images must have an alternative text description to help people understand the meaning of the image. This is referred to as "alt text".

People who may require these descriptions include those with:

  • a visual disability
  • low vision
  • colour blindness
  • images turned off or disabled.

If an image does not have alt text, people who can’t see the image, or who are using a screen reader, will not know what information the image provides.

Alt text should communicate the meaning of the image for anyone who can't see it.

The way you write alt text will vary depending on the context of the picture.

Tip

When a screen reader is focused on an image, it announces "image" before reading the alt text. To avoid repetition, avoid using "image of" or "picture of" in the alt text.
