Our role

Policy Reform and Legislation supports the development of the legislative program, and provides parliamentary and administrative support services, for a range of Ministers who have responsibility in the communities and justice sectors.

This is primarily the Attorney General, but also includes:

• The Minister for Police and Counter-Terrorism
• The Minister for Youth Justice
• The Minister for Families and Communities, and the Minister for Disability Inclusion
• The Minister for Corrections
• The Minister for Seniors, and the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

Policy, Reform and Legislation is responsible for ensuring that the legal and policy framework of the Department is aligned with the government's current priorities. Policy Reform and Legislation's role is to:

• identify the need for, and formulate changes to, the law and legal system,

• ensure quality legal policy advice is provided to the portfolio Ministers and to government,

• implement the portfolio Ministers' legislative programs, and

• inform the community about changes to, and the operation of, legislation within the portfolio.

Justice reforms 2017 - 2020

From 2017 to 2020 the NSW Government introduced a range of ‘tough and smart’ criminal justice reforms to improve community safety, strengthen community-based sentencing, drive down reoffending, and deliver swifter and more certain justice.
